2014 Tenuta Bibbiano "Bibbianaccio" (Elsewhere $100)

Orazio Campoli | K&L Italian Wine Buyer

What a deal on this wine! The 2014 Bibbianaccio from Tenuta di Bibbiano is a unique expression of Sangiovese. It comes from the producer’s best vineyard, and I love that they chose to stick with the traditional Chianti blend of Sangiovese (60%), Colorino (34%), and a small but fascinating inclusion of Malvasia Bianca del Chianti and Trebbiano (6%)—both white varieties. This is the blend once used throughout Chianti before international varieties were introduced, and I’m thrilled to see such a high-quality wine still honoring that heritage.

Situated in Castellina in Chianti, Bibbiano is one of the region’s oldest estates, dating back to the 11th century. The winery practices organic farming and uses both small and large oak casks to craft this wine. Though 2014 is often overlooked in Tuscany, at this point in its evolution, it offers a beautifully fresh, aromatic profile. Secondary fruit notes are emerging—cassis and red berries—while the minty character found in older Sangioveses ties everything together beautifully. The Colorino adds depth and color, and the white grapes lend lift and aromatics. All in all, this wine is a fun way to experience mature Sangiovese without breaking the bank.
