A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar today. At least six regions and states were impacted, home to 28 million people including 6.7 million children.
While the extent of the damage is still unclear due to blocked roads and damaged communication lines, reports indicate people have been killed and injured, and cities across the country have suffered severe damage.
Even before the earthquake, children in Myanmar were facing a dire humanitarian crisis. Now, they are at even greater risk – trapped under rubble, separated from family and without access to food or water.
Jeremy Stoner, Acting Asia Regional Director at Save the Children, says: "While the full extent of the damage is still unclear, we know that children are always the most vulnerable in disasters. They need food, shelter and protection now more than ever."
Save the Children is responding in Myanmar and neighboring countries, like Thailand, that felt the effects of the powerful earthquake. Working closely with local partners, we are assessing needs to ensure our resources are deployed efficiently and effectively.
During this devastating crisis, your donation to our Children’s Emergency Fund will ensure we can continue to meet children’s needs.
