The farewell to summer is the on-ramp to the footy season, and five months on from Brisbane’s historic premiership, the 2025 AFL season is here.
The 2024 season was thrilling, with 30% of all games decided by two goals or less and 1 in 5 decided by under a goal. Scoring was the highest on average since 2018 and 1 in every 3 games was an upset, making it a tipster’s nightmare.
With that as the backdrop, the 2025 season is the most anticipated in recent memory.
Sydney and West Coast enter with new men in charge, while Port Adelaide have already announced that current coach Ken Hinkley will hand over the reins to assistant Josh Carr at season’s end.
For the second year running, New South Wales and Queensland will play host to the Opening Round. From 6 March to 9 March, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney and GWS will all host visiting clubs to launch the new season. The concept is aimed at growing the game in the AFL’s frontier states and pinch some headlines in Rugby League heartland.
